Miami 2010

We took a weekend trip to Miami to visit the bisabuelos (great grandparents) and other Miami family. The visit was great, but the flight experience was awful, even though the kids did better than expected. So that we never forget why we avoid air travel, I'm going to document the horrible experience here. We left our house at 9am on Friday to make our 10:30 flight. Everything went well and we boarded our plane on time. The plane taxied way out to a far away runway and the pilot then announced that all the planes were grounded in Atlanta (our lay-over destination) and that we would be sitting there for at least an hour. Luckily, it was only about an hour and fifteen minutes before we took off. We were kinda okay with it because it was going to make our 3-hr lay-over shorter...or not. Because all of the flights were delyaed getting into Atlanta, we had to circle for a while before we could land. The 1:37 minute flight lasted over 3 hours.

Our flight to Miami was also delayed, so we didn't end up leaving Atlanta until shortly after 8pm (we were supposed to have arrived in Miami at 7:30pm). All of that was not fun, but we weren't upset about it because no one can help weather delays. (This is where it gets really frustrating.) We arrived in Miami a little after 10pm and we walked a really long way to baggage claim, where we waited and waited...and waited for our bags. There were at least 5 flights on one baggage carousel and at least 10 other carousels not being used. Around 11:30, an announcement came on saying that they were going to put our flight's bags on a different carousel, so we went over there and waited some more. I forgot to mention that shortly after we made it to baggage claim, Harrison had had enough. He was completely inconsolable and I just felt so bad for the little guy.

We finally get our bags (1 bag and 1 car seat) a little before midnight and we head out to the curb to wait for our rental car shuttle. Lots of shuttles came and went, but none for Enterprise. Kris calls them up and it turns out that they closed at 11:59pm, so we had missed the last shuttle. UGGHH. We headed back into the airport to see if we could find anyone to help us, but everything was closed (well, except for all of the people STILL waiting on their bags). Exhausted, I tell Kris that we should just take a cab to the hotel. $40 later, we make it to the hotel at 1am and and lay our heads onto our sweet beds at around 1:30am. In the morning we called Enterprise to have them come pick us up so that we could get our car...turns out that not every Enterprise will pick you up, so after fighting with Travelocity and then sitting on hold with Enterprise for over an hour while they tried to find a car for us, my cousin Geli drove Kris back up to the airport so that we could pick up our car.

On the way back home from Miami, we didn't have any delays...unless you count the 30 minute delay to board and the hour and a half that we sat on the plane while they fixed a mechanical problem, but that was nothing compared to the trip up there. We took our time getting to baggage claim and when we got there, we immediately got one of our bags. The luggage carousel then stopped and they announced that there was a mechanical problem with the thing and there would be a delay. It was only 5 minutes, but holy cow... Well, at least we made it through safely...and that is pretty much the only good thing I can say about that.

We had a great time in Miami visiting with relatives and eating Cuban food. Here is Harrison sitting in his bisabuelo's rocking chair

Oh my goodness, that is a horrible travel experience. So sorry. On a brighter note, your kids keep getting cuter every time I see new pictures. I love all the hair that Annelise has. What a doll!
